Quite simply, it is because people find better religion outside of the Church.
Sometimes, they find it outdoors or among other people on Sundays.
Other times, they do not use religious terms. But, they act religiously in seemingly secular settings… such as work.
The point is that, whatever it is, it helps them make meaning faster, better, and cheaper than the Church.
